Feeling worthless?
Consider the encounter of Jesus with the blind beggar:
38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. (Luke 18:38-40a)
The blind beggar’s cries for mercy were an embarrassment to the people. They must have thought a beggar was not someone worth bothering Jesus with. But they were wrong. They should have known that Jesus always had compassion on those in need.
Some of the people may have felt sorry for him but it seems that most of them looked down at him. Many might have regarded him as a worthless member of the society. Perhaps that is how he thought about himself – worthless.
Jesus saw him quite differently: a very precious man created in God’s own image. Jesus never ignored a cry for mercy and that is still the case today, for the Bible tells us that He’s the same yesterday and today and for ever. (Hebrews 13:8)
If you feel worthless for whatever reason, call out to Jesus. He will not ignore your cry. Your circumstances are not important to Him. What matters to him most is your desire to love Him and to follow Him.
Prayer:
Almighty God, I am sure that people look upon me as being worthless. That is how I think of myself. Please God, have mercy on fire just as Jesus showed mercy to that beggar and please help me through this difficult time.
AMEN.
