Feeling worried?
Consider these words:
¬Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? ¬ Luke 12:22-23, 25-26
Often, it is uncertainty about the future that causes us to worry: and worry is like a thief who robs us of our peace of mind.
Jesus had just told a story of a rich farmer who was obsessed with safeguarding his future. Jesus called him a fool, because life is uncertain. He would soon die and all his labours would be wasted. It is foolish to plan for the future but leave God out of your life.
Jesus then told his disciples not to worry: worrying does not achieve anything. He reminds them that we are far more valuable to God than the birds and God feeds them.
Jesus assured his disciples that God knew all about their needs and they should leave the future in His hands. Instead of worrying, they were to focus on seeking God’s kingdom.
Are you worrying about what might happen? It can be hard not to – but read again the words of Jesus. Try to follow his advise and trust him.
Prayer:
Almighty God, I often worry about the future. Please help me to hand my worries over to You and to be able to trust You to provide for my needs. I realize that You know everything abut me and my situation. Thank You for caring for me.
AMEN.
