Unworthy
Words of the younger son in the story of the lost son:
I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. v19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’
Luke 15:18-19 (NIV)
In Jesus’ story of The Lost/Prodigal Son, the younger son decided that he had enough of his job of feeding pigs. That was how he had sunk, having wasted his share of his father’s inheritance.
He thought that the best he could hope for was to get his dad to take him as one of his servants; he no longer felt worthy of being his son. But he need not have worried: his father was so relieved and delighted to see his son again.
Being unworthy is not a barrier to being accepted by God. The truth is we are all unworthy. None of us deserve God’s love and acceptance, whether we have really messed up or whether we think we can boast about our good works.
The wonderful news is that Father God counts us worthy when we come to Him in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only One who is worthy.
Prayer: Dear Father God, I am so grateful that I do not have to pass any test to show that I am worthy to be your child. I know I would fail every test. Thank you for counting me worthy and for accepting me because I come to you in the name of Jesus – AMEN.
